CELEBRATE #SOCIALSATURDAY WITH CO-CARS & ESSENCE, EXETER’S SOCIAL ENTERPRISE NETWORK
Co-cars has announced it is celebrating #socialsaturday (13 October) by spearheading Exeter’s first social enterprise pop-up marketplace.
Taking place in Bedford Square Princesshay from 10.00 to 16.00, the event will showcase members of ESSENCE, the city’s Social Enterprise Network. Shoppers will have the opportunity to learn more about a number of different organisations and have some fun to boot!
Co-cars will be bringing along an electric car (EV) from its low-emission Exeter fleet. Members can hire EVs for just £4.75 an hour and more are soon to arrive at both St David’s and Central stations. The company also runs Co-bikes, the city’s electric bike scheme, and will have an e-bike there for people to try.
Mark Hodgson, Co-cars and Co-bikes founder, commented: “As a social enterprise, we’re all about doing ‘good business’ and I’m delighted to be able to support ESSENCE and #socialsaturday with this event.
“Our car and bike schemes give people proper alternatives to owing a car whilst saving them money and helping them become more active. Plus, they get to feel good about reducing both traffic and pollution and ultimately making our city a better place to live.”
Daphne van Run, Network Lead for Exeter’s Social Enterprise Network (ESSENCE), added: “ESSENCE members are a diverse and vibrant part of Exeter’s business community. #socialsaturday is a great way to highlight some of the amazing work they do in helping create a more inclusive and sustainable local economy.”
Joining Co-cars is Cosmic, experts in all things digital, who are bringing a giant doll’s house equipped with gadgets to demonstrate the connected home. Shoppers can talk to them about joining the ‘Positive People’ programme which offers free support and training across a number of fields, including developing and improving digital technology skills.
Chime, who represent the best of the NHS’s hearing services, are coming with the latest camera technology to give people a chance to look inside their own ears. A Specialist Audiologist will be on hand to advise anyone concerned about hearing loss or wax clearance and on the range of invisible hearing solutions they offer.
Exeter Velocities will be there to share their new programme Origins. This is a social innovation and enterprise programme to support individuals and groups within Exeter’s diverse communities so they can develop local solutions to the issues facing our city and help create impactful change. Exeter Velocities will talk about the two roots of support, guidance, expertise and training on offer within Origins.
#socialsaturday is an annual campaign from Social Enterprise UK which inspires consumers to buy from businesses that put people and planet first. Visit Social Enterprise UK to find out more.

Cosmic are delighted to be running a Digital Leadership Programme for Social Enterprises in 2018 and invite people in senior leadership roles in established social enterprises to find out more and sign up.
Why Digital Leadership (DL)? The Social Enterprise UK 2017 “State of the Sector” survey revealed that “A large proportion (of social enterprises) are still not confident in making effective use of available technology, and that 43% consider their own digital skills average or below – a rise since 2015”. Looking more widely, Cisco (multinational tech leader) predicts that “More than one-third of businesses today will not survive the next 10 years. The only ones that will survive will turn their companies into digital versions of themselves.” Sounds daunting but new technologies can also present great opportunities, in terms of how we plan and deliver services, communicate with customers and stakeholders, manage our business and, ultimately, deliver social impact.
Digital innovations and their impact on businesses are around us every day. We recognise how swiftly the advent of big data and analytics, cloud computing, social media, the Internet of Things and mobile can overturn conventional ways of doing business. But where to start?
On Cosmic’s tried and tested programme, you will learn to: ·

Investing in digital skills is a must for every business at this time, but many businesses are yet to address this issue at senior management and Board levels. Learning how to utilise digital in your business has the potential to raise your competitive edge, increase staff satisfaction and raise productivity levels too. This approach, we believe is the single most efficient way to become a digital leader and to fast track your knowledge.

Calling all (aspiring) members of ESSENCE...
ESSENCE has some exciting development news to share!
We embark on an exciting new leg of our journey in becoming a self-sufficient network: the ESSENCE Steering Group will be proposing to continue as a stand-alone membership organisation and incorporate as a Community Interest Company (CIC). This gives the Network the identity and legal structure that represents what ESSENCE is about: supporting Exeter's social enterprise sector to thrive.
We are calling all current ESSENCE members to come along to a short meeting to vote on this motion. Register your attendance here.
Current members and others aspiring to become an ESSENCE member: if the motion gets accepted, ESSENCE will seek a new relationship with the Exeter Chamber. The General Meeting is the perfect moment to decide if you want to increase your involvement in ESSENCE by becoming a member of the new CIC!
After the voting we will be toasting together with some early X-mas drinks. Join us, by registering here. Hope to see many of you there!
The ESSENCE team
The ESSENCE Steering Group have been busy since our AGM in January 2017. Thanks to the great input from our members and supporters we have reaffirmed our mission, set our course and are ready to announce new plans which will unfold over the coming years. A key part of this is the acquisition of strategic funding which has enabled us to recruit a paid Network Lead who will work under the guidance of the Steering Group.
ESSENCE is now supported by the Heart of the South West Enhance Social Enterprise Programme. The project is operating across the Heart of the South West LEP area to enhance the competitiveness of small and medium sized enterprises (social enterprise support). It is part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund. This funding will enable the ESSENCE network to continue to support social enterprises across the Heart of the South West LEP area and connect members and supporters to the advisory services on offer.
To hear all about the programme and to meet our new Network Lead please come along to our first Seasonal Social on Tuesday 26th September, 4-6pm, Exeter Library, Castle Street, EX4 3PQ. The event is free and refreshments will be provided by Real Food Cafe.
